Diesel’s Journey Home: A Senior Dog’s Second Chance

Diesel had all the odds stacked against him: a large, black mixed breed, already 12 years old. In rescue, these factors can lead to longer waits for adoption, valuable time that Diesel did not have.

Diesel had all the odds stacked against him: a large, black mixed breed, already 12 years old. In rescue, these factors can lead to longer waits for adoption, valuable time that Diesel did not have.

The BarkingMad adoptions team added Diesel to our rehoming network, hoping that someone special would see the loving, affectionate dog who could still be someone’s best friend. The team shared Diesel far and wide, but were bracing themselves for a long journey ahead.

Then, a special family reached out. They had fallen in love with Diesel from pictures alone.

His potential new home was one filled with animals: other dogs, cats and chickens. We couldn't help wondering: could an old dog really learn new tricks?

We were nervous about how Diesel would cope in an unfamiliar environment, but incredibly grateful that he had been given this second chance.

And when Diesel arrived at his new home, he fit right in.

One year later, we received a heartwarming update from his family:

“I call him my sunshine dog because he loves sun bathing and watching the sunrise and sunset, and also my jackpot dog because we totally hit the jackpot with him. He's the best boy and we love him so much”

At 13 years old, Diesel is thriving in his new home.

His family told us that their other dog, Maya, seemed like a puppy again, thanks to her new companion.

Diesel's story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, it just takes one special person to change an animal's life. And in the process, they may find that their own life has changed for the better too.

Welcome home, Diesel. ❤️
