Not without my dog is a call to action for housing authorities, corporate housing providers, and retirement village management to adopt pet-inclusive policies that allow people to live with their pets. It’s time to reform these restrictive policies and give families the right to stay together with their furry companions.
We believe that pets are not just animals, but cherished family members who bring comfort, companionship, and joy to people of all ages. Yet, many housing policies—especially in corporate-run housing complexes and retirement villages—prohibit pets, forcing families to choose between their home and their beloved pets.
Why This Is Important:
Pets are known to have numerous physical and mental health benefits. From reducing stress and anxiety to offering unconditional love and support, pets play an essential role in people’s lives. Studies have shown that pet owners experience lower blood pressure, reduced feelings of loneliness, and improved mental well-being.
Pets also help seniors stay active and provide emotional support that helps combat isolation. For many seniors, a pet is not just a companion—they are a lifeline to happiness and well-being.
What We’re Asking For:
We urge housing authorities, corporations, and retirement villages to take immediate steps to reform housing policies by implementing the following actions:
Allow Pets in Housing: Adopt pet-inclusive policies in all housing complexes and retirement villages, ensuring that people and their pets can stay together.
Set Clear Guidelines: Create reasonable and fair pet ownership guidelines that ensure responsible pet ownership (i.e., no damage, no disturbances, etc.) while still allowing pets in homes.
Support Legislation: Advocate for legislation that supports equitable access to pet-friendly housing for all families, seniors, and individuals across the country.
Provide Options for Pet Care: For senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, provide additional support for those who rely on pets for emotional and mental health well-being.
