Nellie … My Big Dream
When I first saw Nellie, it was on a late Saturday afternoon. Some miracle person had just driven all the way from KNZ to bring her to Dogtown. She was living feral for 7 years.
Everyone was trying to lure her out of a cage that was built in this wonderful person’s car, especially for Nellie. No one knows how she would react, so everyone was very careful not to upset her. Finally one of our senior caregivers got her out of the car and she was put in her quarantine garden.
The moment I laid eyes on her, I knew she was special. Although she was not in my care, I went to sit with her every possible moment. I talked to her, even sang to her, told her how special she was and tried to get near her. She ducked away every time I went close. My heart broke every time. I so desperately want to hug her. But I knew it would be a long road to recovery and her trusting humans again.
Then one day she stood up and came to sniff my treat bag. I nearly feinted. That was so wonderful! From that day on our relationship grew and she will now come to take treats out of my hand. Her special treat is when she would lay down next to me and I will sing to her and she will get so relaxed that she falls asleep.
A few weeks ago I had a dream……..about Nellie. We were in a field and she came running to me! When she reached me I went down and I gave her a big hug. We rolled in the grass…. laughing. I couldn’t get enough of cuddling her…. and she let me!
We then went for a long, long walk on the beautiful mountain trail (and yes, it was on the new Dogtown premises), me laughing and singing. I was so happy! And Nellie……she looked so beautiful, relaxed and happy!
What a wonderful dream that was!
And yes, in my heart I still believe that this dream will someday comes true!
And then she will become part of my family……….
