Don’t Hug the Dog! And other things kids should know…

BRAND NEW Dog safety program being offered at local schools.

DogtownSA, a local Rescue centre will be taking a break from teaching dogs their manners to teach something even more important for dog-owning families and kids everywhere. With the help of Dog Stars, a program designed specifically for elementary school-aged kids, DogtownSA will bring fun and energy into educating the younger members of our community about the right way to behave around dogs. The aim of the program is to increase appropriate child-dog interactions in order to decrease the amount of stress that dogs can feel around children and the bites that could follow. “The program is simple yet still comprehensive and really entertaining for the kids!” says Tracy of DogtownSA, “They get to watch videos and play games that help them really understand dogs, and then take home colorful, interactive handouts to help educate their parents too.”

While most bite prevention programs focus on what to do when a stray or aggressive dog approaches a child, Dog Stars represents a whole new take on dog safety. With 50% of children bitten by the time they are 12 years old, and 77% of all bites coming from the family or a friend’s dog, the importance of teaching kids how to behave safely around the dogs they spend time with cannot be understated. Developed by thefamilydog.com, Dog Stars is a simple and fun program that focuses on teaching kids how to really RESPECT the dogs they know and love. It’s only 30-40 minutes long and uses games and music videos with catchy lyrics to get this important message across, so the kids keep singing about dog safety long after the workshop is over.
“We’re thrilled to have created something “out of the box” that speaks to kids in a way they find exciting and can truly understand. The key is to teach kids that their actions count and that they never want to put a dog in a position where he feels he needs to protect himself,” say Hatley & Schuurmans, founders of The Family Dog. The Dog Stars program is a win-win. Not only are we keeping our kids safe, but we’re saving dogs by keeping them out of shelters, too.”
